Leveraging the power of Innovation to drive social progress
Social innovation is about leveraging innovation to drive social progress. These innovations can be products, services or new business models addressing unmet needs more effectively. At Bayer, we are convinced that progress can only be achieved through a holistic and collaborative approach involving all relevant stakeholders. We are therefore joining forces with social entrepreneurs and stakeholders in the area of health and agriculture to help improve living conditions and social progress for communities in need.
From surviving to thriving in agriculture
Today, 80 percent of food supply within developing countries is dependent on smallholder farmers who grow produce on less than two hectares of land. “Our ambition is to enable and empower smallholder farmers with a holistic scope of offerings including technology, services and healthcare to lift them out of poverty and enable them to become successful entrepreneurs,” said Monika Lessl, Bayer’s Head of Corporate Innovation, R&D and Societal Engagement, adding: “To achieve this we are building an ecosystem and collaborating with social enterprises which have the reach and local expertise to engage with and positively impact farmers and their families for years to come.”
Partnerships with social entrepreneurs
Since the beginning of 2018, Bayer has forged several partnerships with social entrepreneurs to support social innovations and sustainable development in Africa. These are for example
1.) MyAgro, a company offering “scratch card” credit, seeds and training to farmers in Africa.
2.) One Acre Fund, a social enterprise supplying smallholder farmers with financing, tools and training.
Bayer’s ambition is to reach and positively impact the lives of 100 million people – smallholder farmers and their families – by 2030. This is a bold goal and can only be achieved through collaboration with social innovators and partnerships with key stakeholders across the value chain.
