Researchers worldwide working on traits that improve crop productivity are encouraged to participate in Bayer’s new program.

Monheim, July 5, 2016 – With its open innovation program Grants4Traits, Bayer now supports novel ideas that will lead to innovative commercial seed products. Researchers at universities, other scientific institutions, or start-up companies all over the world working on traits that will help achieve higher yield, quality and safety in crops are encouraged to participate in Bayer’s new program.

Grants4Traits aims at finding novel proposals and promising technologies which could result in the development of innovative traits or approaches to provide yield enhancement, insect, weed and disease control in agricultural crops. This includes for instance solutions that protect crops from herbicides or decrease pressure from weeds; new approaches to optimize gene or protein expression, activity and regulation; or solutions to protect crops from insects, nematodes or fungal diseases.

Beyond funding promising projects, Bayer could also offer scientific assistance and develop further any research projects or ideas by providing its own expertise and technologies. This support could subsequently be extended into long-term research collaborations. Applications for Grants4Traits can be easily and quickly submitted via a website. Only non-confidential information should be submitted.

With its initiative, Bayer is seeking to drive innovation in seeds and traits. “Agriculture urgently needs new solutions. Crops worldwide are facing increasing pressure from weeds, insects, diseases and unfavorable climate conditions. We at Bayer see innovation as the main driver to solve this,” said Dr. Adrian Percy, Head of Research and Development at Bayer’s Crop Science Division. “Yet, this challenge is too big for one company alone. This is why big or small companies, universities and other research institutes need to join forces in order to sustain innovation and find the best solutions for sustainable agriculture together.”

Grants4Traits is the next open innovation project of Bayer’s Crop Science division after the successful launch of Grants4Targets, an initiative that aims to find new modes of action in crop protection, in February 2016. Since then, around 67 proposals have been submitted with Bayer supporting more than 20 projects of them.
