Leverkusen, October 26, 2018 – The nationwide Bayer Young Science Ambassadors project, which aims to have children and young people excited about science and research, has started its tour program for the eighth year in succession. This season, Bayer Young Science Ambassadors will visit the elementary schools at ten different cities across Turkey.

The initiative implemented by the Community Volunteers Foundation enables volunteer Turkish university students to go into schools as science ambassadors where they conduct scientific experiments, mainly in the fields of health, agriculture and nutrition. While the main program is conducted during school time, an additional Science Seeds Team has also been visiting villages and rural settelements during the summer months.

Since the project was launched in 2011, more than 2,500 ambassadors – Bayer Young Science Ambassadors and Science Seeds Team members – have visited schools and villages and interacted with over 33,000 pupils during their lessons. A key factor in the project’s success has been the 280 or so former student ambassadors who are now teaching in Turkish schools and integrating into their lessons what they learned through the project. In this way, more than 2,200 pupils have additionally joined the ranks of the girls and boys profiting from the Bayer Young Science Ambassadors project. In the project’s eighth year the target is to reach out to even more children and young people in Turkish schools. As the new semester started, more university students have already been prepared and trained as Bayer Young Science Ambassadors.

“Bayer Young Science Ambassadors is a lighthouse project in Bayer’s engagement for science and education in Turkey,” says Thimo V. Schmitt-Lord, who chairs the Bayer Foundations. “It fits in perfectly with the focus of our global social engagement because it combines support for volunteer work with the furtherance of scientific talent – and thus reflects in a wonderful way the Bayer Foundations’ focus on education and research, health and social needs.”
